Central Park was masterfully designed by Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux in the mid-19th century and comprises a massive 843 acres (3.41 sq. kilometers). It stretches from 59th Street all the way up to 110th St, making it more than 51 city blocks in length.

The designers of Central Park envisioned it with a democratic ideal; this would be a place where New Yorkers of every background and economic level would be able to gather and mingle in a bucolic expanse.

For locals, New York City without Central Park is unthinkable. It's the green lung of Manhattan and serves as a collective "back yard" for millions of people living in apartments with limited or nonexistent private outdoor space.
